(S) Stylust: Tell us about Kalos!

(K) Kalos: Kalos started as us three girls from White Rock; Tegan, Lindsay, and Bethany, just making feathers for ourselves and friends. In the summer of 2009 we went down to the Vancouver Folk Festival Market and decided to set up a blanket outside of the gate. Not really expecting much,  we were surprised and excited when a lot of girls showed interest in our feather earrings and wanted to know how to get more! That’s when we decided to make a website and a name for ourselves. The word “Kalos”, meaning “God’s eminent beauty” is tattooed on Tegan’s foot and thats where we got our name from. Since then our website has grown internationally, we now sell in stores, partake in the Vancouver Folk Festival annually, and this hobby has become an enjoyable business.

S: Who do you design for? Who is the Kalos girl?

K: The Kalos girl is trendy, thrifty, and loves finding unique treasures! We design for girls just like us. We make products that we would wear at prices that every girl can afford.

S: Favorite place to hang out in the summer?

K: The Beach. Any Beach. We love this little breakfast place at White Rock Beach called ‘Poultry in Motion’, they have the best raspberry muffins!

S: Top 3 fashion picks for summer 2011?

K: Maxi skirts, Denim overalls, and we’re really loving the feather hair extensions.

S: You guys are busy bees! What is happening this summer that you are most excited about?

K: The Vancouver Folk Festival is something we we look forward to every year, and this year especially because we’re focusing a lot more on vintage clothing and accessories along with our feather earrings. We’ve been putting a lot of work into prepping for the weekend; lots of vintage shopping and feather making nights, and we plan on doing feather hair extensions there as well!

S: One piece of advice for the young business woman.

K: People recognize passion, be confident and willing to put your whole heart into it. That’s helped us out a lot, believing in your product or your business and loving what you do!
